1. Who operates LumenBooks?
LumenBooks is operated by Juraj Šuda, Slovakia (“we”, “us” or “our”). Where data protection law requires a data controller, the operator named above is the controller for the processing described in this policy. You can reach us at contact@lumenbooks.org.
2. Information we process
Information stored in your browser. LumenBooks uses your browser’s local storage to remember your reading progress, books marked as in progress or read, your last reading position, saved and known vocabulary words, your chosen translation language and your text-size setting. This information stays on your device and is not sent to our servers. You can remove it at any time by clearing the website data in your browser.
Technical and security information. When you load the website, our hosting, content delivery and security providers process technical data such as your IP address, the time of the request, the requested URL, and browser and device information. This is necessary to deliver the website and keep it secure.
Words you look up. When you tap a word to see its translation, that word (and the language you selected) is sent to a third-party translation service. We do not send your name, email or other identifying information with it.
Messages you send us. If you email us, we receive the information you include, such as your email address and message. Please do not send sensitive personal information unless it is necessary.
We do not require you to create an account, and we do not run user registration, comments or payment features.
3. How we use information
We use information to provide and maintain the website, remember your reading preferences on your device, translate words you request, respond to your messages, protect the website against abuse, fix technical problems, meet legal obligations and, where you have given any required consent, show and measure advertising.
4. Legal bases (GDPR)
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — operating, securing and improving the website.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — for cookies and similar technologies used for advertising, and for any storage that is not strictly necessary, where the law requires it. You can withdraw consent at any time (see the Cookie Settings).
- Steps at your request / legal obligations (Art. 6(1)(b) and (c)) — when we answer your enquiry or must comply with the law.
5. Advertising and Google AdSense
LumenBooks uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its partners may use cookies, device identifiers, IP addresses and similar technologies to serve, limit, measure and protect advertisements. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s previous visits to this and other websites.
Depending on your location and your choices, ads may be personalised or non-personalised. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, advertising cookies are used only after you have given consent through our consent message.
You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google Ads Settings or at aboutads.info. More information: How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy.

7. Recipients and international transfers
Information is processed by the service providers listed above, some of which act on our behalf and some under their own privacy terms (for example, advertising providers). Some of them are located or process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where the GDPR applies, such transfers rely on safeguards such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or Standard Contractual Clauses. We do not sell your personal information.
8. Retention
Reading preferences stored in your browser remain there until you delete them. Emails are kept only as long as needed to handle your enquiry and keep reasonable records. Technical logs and advertising data are kept by the relevant providers according to their own policies.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, restriction of or objection to processing, data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Slovakia this is the Office for Personal Data Protection of the Slovak Republic (Úrad na ochranu osobných údajov SR, dataprotection.gov.sk). To make a request, email contact@lumenbooks.org. We may need to verify your identity before responding.
